How to replace the rubber boot on the steering cable

I have a 1996 VIP Vision boat with a 3.0L Mercruiser Inboard with an Alpha 1 outboard. The rubber boot that seals the steering cable is bad and I need to replace it. Can't figure out how to disconnect the end of the cable to slip the new boot on. Anyone got any tips. Thanks in advance.

look in the adults only sticky of this forum for your manual. and then start by removing the out drive.
