I am going to try to attempt to remove the lower unit from my 50 hp outboard force. I do not have a manuel. I would like to know how and what it looks like inside when I take it off. Last saturday coming in from fishing the motor would not go into foward to load on the trailer, so I am trying to see what may have happened. Being a lady my friends don't think I can do it, so I need your help. Thank You

... hey lady nj, you can do it.

use the sticky post in this forum called 'step by step impeller change'. it has what you need to drop that LU. while your at it by an impeller kit and replace it. take care not to move the shift rod once off the o/b leg. your gunna have about a 3' steel shaft with splines attached to the lower unit housing. make sure the O/B is rasied to have clearance to slide it out. also dont bend or break the water feed tube, it will also be on the LU. see pic. when you go to put the lu back in it will be a little heavy & cumbersome. an extra hand wouldn't hurt, and I'm not saying that cause your a woman.

best of luck

The sticky post is for 3 and 4 cylinder models. Is there a step by step for an 1987 50?
