I purchased a 97 Kawasaki 1100 STX that had overheated. I found the water lines clogged with oxidation or scale (white snow looking stuff) and figure that was the cause. I was thinking of filling it with CLR maybe to loosen it then flushing it out. I have it apart and have blown a lot of it out with compressed air but want to get it all. I know with car coolant systems you have to neutralize after cleaning to protect the alum. Is there a better way to clean this thing out and can I protect it somehow?

i was told a long time ago that vinegar works on this type of build up. dilute with water i think. soak over night. give it a try. it works on radiator cores.

I think they have a product for that at most marinas. I would be concerned about the effects of clr on the rubber lines.

Niether vinegar or CLR did anything. Wound up power washing to knock most of it off.

Sometimes the calcium buildup is too thick to remove chemically. Now that you knocked most of it back you can use CLR, Lime Away, or vinegar to clear the rest of the buildup. Flush with clean water and you should be okay.
