How to remove flywheel, 50hp

Ok, so I've figured out my power issue; I'm only operating on one cylinder.
I tried 3 different coils, so I've come to the conclusion it's not a coil problem
(unless all 3 were bad, but the odds are against that). So, that leaves me
with points/condensor, right? The problem is, I've never removed a flywheel
and according to my Service Manual, I need a flywheel puller tool, which, of
course, I don't have.

Is there another way to remove the flywheel and is this something that an
extreme mechanical rookie could accomplish? Or, am I better served taking
this thing to a professional? I've come this far, and I must say the one
cylinder ran like a top, lol. Fuel issues are fixed and she's pumping water,
now, but I need both cylinders to fire. Compression checked fine, so it's
definitely under the flywheel. Help!:redface:

Hang In There emoney! I wish I had some of your energy. Taking your time, respecting your manual and recent or past posts will get many of your task/challenges done. A visit to AutoZone or Etc for the puller is your best option in my opinion. I?m trying to visualize your next question once you get the flywheel off. Bottom Line! Do your research, work in your abilities/experiences and stay in your abilities with reasonable help.

My preference was/is to read related info to a task (related to technical info/techniques) watch a Pro perform the task if needed (to see the experience in action vs guessing), then tackle the next need with a better understanding.

I know that the local Advance and Auto Zone here in town loans out tools at no charge.
Just need a credit card in case you don't bring them back.


I wouldn't attempt to pull a flywheel without a puller.
Too much could go wrong as per bending it or breaking something else trying to pry it off.

My modified universal puller that works that was not originally machined wide enough but will include my 1970, 35 HP Chrysler now. AutoZone is cheaper! Attached and it work using the same principles (impact or cheater torque and ?Bamb? if needed with good 5-8 grade bolts and washers). JOW

Well, the way I look at it is that if I've mucked something up, or taken the long way around?

Yeah I'm learning most of the stuff the hard way, lol. So I decided that
the flywheel might be a little too big of a challenge for me. Went and talked
to my local Marine Tech Shop and we've agreed on a fair # for the both
of us. Another good thing for me, he just bought out another shop that
seemed to spend a lot of time working on old Chryslers so he might even
have the new points/condensors right there. I'm going to also have him
check his stock to see if he has new coils while he's at it. I can install
them, but at least I'll have the parts.

By the time I'm done, i should have a 2010 Chrysler 50hp outboard! One of
a kind, I'm sure.....lol

If you fell comfortable working on the points then pulling a flywheel is something you can do. Its very easy to do, you just need the puller. Autozone rents it I think, and harbor freight sells one (they call it a bolt puller set), you'll need to buy 3 grade 8 1/4 bolts though as the HF kit doesn't come with any in this size.
