Hello again,
A few months back I asked about low compression in my 86 Mariner 75HP. I believe several suggested I pull the exhaust cover and check the rings to make sure they just weren't stuck and check everything for wear. Now that nasty winter is finally over, I thought I'd take a look. I bought a shop manual but I can't find anything spacific to only removing the exhaust cover. It says to remove it when I have the powerhead out. I removed everything that looks like its in the way but how do I get to the lower bolts? Do I have to pull the powerhead?
I am sorry, that I don't know some of the terminology or what a "front cowl" is or what the lower cowl thats in my way is called. I wish the book had basic pictures with an arrow to point out which cover is which, ect. Can the, what I call the lower cowl, be removed, lowered or raised?
If for any reason, I need to add a picture here, before I go through all of it, what is the minimum size?
Thanks for any help,
Karl.

In your previous posts, you never posted the s/n of your engine. Do you have it?

What manual did you purchase?

Hello,
The manual is a SELOC. Just curious, reading through the shop manual and looking on-line, isn't there only 1 model 4 cyl. 75 HP? Anyway, the S.N. is #A199493.
Hope that helps,
Karl.

Karl, You can remove the transfer covers on the starboard side of the motor, and see the pistons and cylinders. Much easier than removing the exhaust cover.

As above and will save you a lot of heartache if/when the exhaust cover bolts start breaking. Only asked about the s/n to see if you wanted the Merc/Mariner manual but as you have purchased the Seloc, ..................

Aftermarket manuals never have near as much detailed information as the factory manuals have.

You can remove the bolts holding the lower cowl and drop it down out of the way.

Exhaust side cover bolts can be a trick to remove. They tend to seize and must be 'finessed' out or the will simply twist the heads off.

My favorite is a 1/4 inch drive air gun turned down to about half power. The rapid hammer blows tend to vibrate and break loose corrosion far better than simply brute force turning a wrench. Brute force most often just breaks bolts off.

Lots of patience.

If no air tool, then a good ball-peen hammer in your dominant hand and a cheap six point wrench in your weak hand. Rapidly tap, beat, the beeJuses out of the bolt head will holding moderate pressure turning the bolt. Once it starts to turn, QUIT, let it cool while you move on to the next. Threads heat quickly while turning, the bolt expands and seizes tighter. Let it fully cool and start over, give it at least 15 minutes to cool.

The one reply said that the aftermarket shop manual[SELOC] is not as good as the original. Is the original compleatly different or is the aftermarket[SELOC] a direct copy of the original and being a copy, is never as clear as the original? IF they are different, are the originals available or at least direct copies of the original available?

The factory service manual describes EVERYTHING, breaking everything down into incremental steps.

Since this is a published work, the aftermarket can't readily just copy any of the pages, that would be plagiarism and they would be banned by the courts plus face very stiff fines. So they get around it by copying only parts of the Merc manual, leaving out important details, any I bet they have to pay heavy royalties for the paragraphs they have copied.

After market manuals sometimes cover many models.----If you have experience you can spot the mistakes and conflicting information in these manuals.-----------If you are working on a motor for the first time then you are not aware that they are making you jump off a cliff !!

What about CLYMER manuals? It says "OFFICIAL" on the front. What does that mean? How good are these manuals? I've found a few used ones covering 2-200HP from late 70s-late 90s. They look to be fairly thick. Would one of these be a good manual for my 1986-75HP Mariner needs?
Thanks again for any help and HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY WEEKEND!
Karl.

The non-factory manuals are really poor in detail. Also, sometimes the mistakes are huge. They can be OK if one is experienced with Mercs and just need some general info on a particular model, he has not yet worked on.
