How to release steering cable from helm ?

Replacing my steering cable.
Helm is a teleflex rotary unit from approx 1977.

I have disconnected the cable from the motor end.
Have removed the large coupling nut from the helm end.

But need to know how to release the cable from the helm.

I know when you feed the cable into the helm, there is some sort of a locking device which locks onto the cable. How do you release it ?

Is there some trick here that I am missing?

There's a slide pin or tab that you have to push in to release the end coupler on most. It's either a hole or a slot that releases the cable.

there is a hole on the back side of the red circle, you push a small pin into it. this releases the cable and turn the steering wheel. click picture to enlarge.

No pin, tab, hole, button, etc.

I just grabbed the greasy cable part and gave it a yank, out it came. !

that's strange, had to be something to hole the sheath, so the cable would slide in side.

Yes, the sheath was attached with the coupling nut.

But after I removed the nut, and moved the junk out of the way, all I had to do was pull the remaining foot of cable out of the helm. I was lead to believe there was a locking mechanism holding the end of the cable into the helm.

that explains it. that is a very old style helm. on the quick connects you just push the pin, give a little tug, and turn the wheel and the cable comes right out.
