I'm sure this has been asked numerous times but I didn't find it in the forum  , Just replaced the impeller and it doesn't seem to want to prime either with muffs or on the trailer sitting at the ramp. I haven't run it more than 60 seconds per attempt or run the RPMs past idle. The new impeller is from the Volvo store and looks to be the same as the one that came out (which appeared to be in good shape). The swap (other than standing on my head to get to the pump) was uneventful.
Just before replacing the impeller, had run the motor with the muffs to flush out the low tox antifreeze and it was dumping water from the exhaust. Now after replacing the impeller there isn't any water coming out with the exhaust. The only thing that changed between flushing the antifreeze and now was replacing the impeller. What am I overlooking or not doing ?

Are you sure you have the proper impeller installed. There are some out there that are 1/8" to short.

They looked the same, I won't be able to pull the pump, again, until next weekend.
All the veins were making contact and appeared to be the same. The part is Volvo Penta 3862281 which is what came up ordering by the year and engine size.
Would I take from your reply that the pump should prime itself at idle quickly if everything is working properly ?
The hassle involved with removing the pump, I would be inclined to buy a whole new pump assembly at the near 300 price tag vs. taking the pump on/off multiple times and waiting for multiple parts to arrive trying to chase down the problem. But in the same breath don't want to throw away good money.

It should, as long as you have a sufficient supply of water to the muffs and no air leaks in the system. did you replace the oring?

you have me at a disadvantage, I don't know what the full model number of your engine is, nor the serial number, or even a year. So I can only guess at your problem.

Re: How to prime new impeller on 5.7GSi

Don,

The serial number is T01308732 which is a 98 5.7 GSi
The part that has me baffled is it was drawing water from the muffs an hour before replacing the impeller, nothing changed between then and starting the motor after replacing the impeller and now it isn't drawing water. I may be way out in right/left field but it seems like it lost the prime, maybe I'm crazy. If it had a air leak it would seem it wouldn't have pulled water from the muffs before replacing he impeller(been in storage since September). Both hoses are clamped down tight on the pump. However all the water in the pump and hoses is now missing as a result of the impeller replacement, which is my thinking it may have lost the prime.
When using the muffs it is easy to see it isn't drawing water by observing the lower unit, while at the ramp I am relying on feeling the hose for the cool lake water from the pump into the thermostat manifold (or whatever it is called where the raw water hose Ts off to the water pump and exhaust manifolds) to judge if raw water is being pulled in.
Have the V.P. Workshop Manual which confirms, in the cooling chapter, the hoses are correct with the inlet hose on the inside (closest to the engine) and the hose to the intake manifold on the outbound side. Again I was of the belief it was self priming and don't understand why it isn't pulling water.

Ahhhh, you have the OMC version of the motor, not Volvo. Same engine and systems, just different serial numbers. Though it doesn't matter for this post, for future reference, you need to post the full model number (including the numbers after the GSi ) for better help here in the Volvo forum.

To follow up.
The Volvo manual stated to not put anything on the gasket.
The Volvo OEM water impeller came with two sets of instructions. One stating to put lubricant on the gasket and the other stating to use sealant.

All OEM Volvo, each saying something differnet.

A trip to the parts store for some ultra copper silicone for the water pump gasket and it is working like a charm.

Volvo has changed their instructions on gaskets....after years of telling everyone to leave them dry, it seems riser-manifold gaskets also require copper based sealants....so new bulletins were published to inform everyone.....too late for me.

Good to know the pump is behaving as it should.
