I recently purchased a 1992 Smoker Craft 15 ft Alaskan with a 93 Yamaha 50 hp jet. Iam in the process of semi-restoring it, but I don't know how to operate the side mounted throttle control. i thought it was just push throttle forward.. go., backward reverse.., is there more to it than that? there is a toggle switch on the dash, is that a kill switch? What makes it even harder to learn as I go, is the motor won't keep running. I think it might need a carb rebuild. I have searched the internet but can't find the operating instructions. I know there are greatpeople on the forum tat can help.

Any pictures? You should normally have a one of a few types. Usual of all would be a throttle and a forward and reverse. You will likely have a trim setting for the jet nozzle too perhaps. There will be a kill switch lanyard attachment somewhere too.

You don't need to schmooze us to get information. lol.

The Yamaha 703 external side mount control box can be set as either a push to open or a push to close configuration.

A toggle switch might be used to activate a choke mechanism for those Yams that have a choke. The key switch being pressed in should also be doing that function.

Finally, the 703 control box has a kill switch already on it.

the one on my 703 has a red part on the underside of the Tee handle that you squeeze to lift up so you can move the handle out of neutral to forward or reverse.
is that what you are asking about?

I should have attached pics the first time. There is a red button on the left side of the throttle, What does it do? there is a key off/on and hill switch attached with a lanyard, but there is also a toggle switch on the counter? in the last pic, there is a metal arm that can be raised while in the neutral position, what does that do?
I want to thank you all that already have responded. thanks Boscoe99 for the Yamaha link, i just ordered the manual, hope that will answer other questions also.

You think these will have the usual 703 box fitted ? You might be right. But being a jet drive, I just presumed otherwise perhaps. But in all honesty, I’ve never actually seen a jet outboard in the flesh. Just presumed that there would need to be a set up that allowed throttle and operation of the bucket on the jet. Maybe the 703 can do that function ?

The red button unlocks the throttle/shift handle so that it can be shifted into forward or reverse.

That is an old box that has the toggle switch which activates the choke on the motor. Later versions use a push-the-key to activate the choke.

The metal arm is the fast idle lever. Lifting the arm allows the RPM of the motor to be increased without having to shift the motor into gear.

My understanding is that the shift function of the 703 box controls the jet pump gate. Gate is in place when the shifter is in reverse. Gate is out of the way when the shifter is in forward. Gate is positioned midway when the shifter is in neutral.

Yeah. Looks like that’s exactly the control it has. Was t expecting that. You’re spot on.

normally those control boxes would be turned around and mounted on the right side of the boat, so when you have a hold of it with your right hand you could operate the tilt and trim button with you thumb
