Here's a question from a newbie:
Are there any rules of thumb on how to bolt an OB to a boat, like angle, height, etc ??
Thanks for any enlightening.

Gruss Gott!

First, make sure it is absolutely in the center of the transom. If it is a larger outboard make sure you drill holes and run at least 2 stainless steel bolts and be sure to bed the bolts in the transom with quality (3m 4200 or equalivant) sealant.

The angl can be adjusted after it is mounted. The cavitation plate should be even with or slighly above the bottom of the transom height.

Post more info such as boat type, horsepower, engine type and we will supply more tips.

Danke,
Bob

A lot depends on the number of motors, hull type, style of propeller and intended use. You didnt give us a lot to go on so we can only assume its a top secret project. Lol!

All kidding aside, I strive to mount a single engine in the center of the running surface which may or may not be in the center of the transom. The height (X dimension) will be defined by intended use, prop style and hull design.

Let us know more and we can be more specific.

Good luck!

Thank you guys fro your replies, and Gruss Gott Bob!
Now the boat is a 4.4 m (14.4 ft), 4-seater open sport boat, with fiberglass hull. The engine is a '78 80hp Mercury.

The engine is mounted already, raised in X dimension by around an inch.

I guess the engine is a little oversized for this boat, I keep the in the second-neerest hole to the transom, cant get it in the neerest one, since the reverse lock doesnt clamp it that way.

The cavitation plate is in line with the bottom line of the boat.

Am I on the right track?

Asking, coz the boat lifts its nose pretty quite a bit.

Danke!

Sounds like a fun ride. If you are getting that much bow lift with neutral trim, that's great. Is the rig doing everything you expected? Are you looking for improvements in a specific area?

I had a 115 on a 13 footer once. What a handfull!

Good luck!
