How to make my engine start after the first or 2nd try ?

Hi all,<br /><br />Last time i went out it took me 15-20 turns of the key for the engine to finnally start up then i had to give it some gas in neutral for 30 secs so it wouldnt shut off.<br /><br />My process when starting .<br /><br />1. 1-3 pushes on the trottle lever<br />2. start the ignition<br />3. retry until she starts<br />4. hold down the neutral button and give it some gas ( about 1300 rpm) for 30 secs <br />5 leave it in neutral for a min and head off ...<br /><br />any recommendations ?<br /><br />Thanks all

Choke setup. Not adjusted right or missing<br />or stuck.<br /><br />How are the hot starts?

Is it obvious if you have a choke or not? I dont see one anywhere near my Throttle.

No, it is on the carb...<br />When you pump the throttle, the 'butterfly' should close & enrich the mixture for easier starting....<br />Take the flame arrestor off, (when cold) & pump the throttle & observe what happens....<br />Better yet have an assistant pump the throttle.....JK

Check your accel pump. If its not squirting much fuel when you pump the throttle will make it very difficult to start. I had that exact problem.

WildLife- Hot Starts are perfect ... no problem at all .... Its only after its been sitting for a week and i try to start her up it takes 10+ cranks to get her started...<br /><br />IM goin to the boat tonight ... ill post on what happends

After you pump the throttle a few times you should leave it in nuetral and advance the throttle a bit and then try and start it with the throttle advanced.

If the choke is properly working you should be able to put it in nuetral,push throttle one time all the way forward to activate choke linkage and pull it back to just above idle and start it..

I am glad the hot starts are good.<br />Is this boat new to you?<br />Have you ever not had trouble with cold starts?<br />I think people have given good advice.<br />In Canada I guess a good choke is a must?<br />I don't use them, just pump a few strokes <br />of the throttle and wait for it to get warm.<br />It is not uncommon for chokes to need adjustment,<br />Be happy it wasn't staying on causing hot start<br />problems <br />A good manual is worth its weight in gold.<br />Adjust that choke

Yes bought it 2 weeks ago.... been out 5 times so far..... just one time i had problems with cold starts.<br /><br />Yesterday afternoon It started first time cold .. maybe its just getting used to me lol

Its only after its been sitting for a week and i try to start her up it takes 10+ cranks to get her started...<br /><br />After 7-8 days the fuel has evaporated from fuel bowl,<br />accelerator pump has nothing to pump.<br />Crank engine 8-10 seconds - fuel bowl fills up - 2 quick<br />full pumps on throttle - set throttle just above idle -<br />start. Common problem.

Congratulations on your new baby.<br />Everyone who posted had great advice.<br />I guess it is safe to say everything<br />on you boat is in good shape.<br />Elpaso has a great point about fuel evaporation.<br />Marc and Gary also.<br />We all had to discover some of the finer<br />points of our particular beasts er boats<br />I still recommend a good manual for future<br />needs, and there will be needs
