I have a 1979 Johnson 70 horse on a StarCraft and I have to replace the transom wood. Can someone direct me to the proper way of lifting off the motor while I take care of this task? I attached a pic of the way my motor looks.100_8050.jpg

Thanks

Look on top of the flywheel and see if there are three threaded holes there I believe they are 5/16 holes.. I went to a box store and short eye bolts screwed them in and there you go.

Really? A flywheel can support that much weight?

How do you balance the weight evenly on the three different points

Lift it using the lifting hook that's attached to your motor. It the hook(that looks bent on your motor) behind the flywheel.

I circled it(hard to see) in this pic

Thank you. That's the first thing I thought of, but it looks so wimpy to me. Can that thing really support over 200 lbs?

Hell no!! Its only there for show. ;):D

Seriously, yes it can handle the weight but your motor might still be front heavy, loop an extra lifting strap or rope around the lower cowling at the front to keep it more vertical while lifting and transferring to a stand.

My motor is missing the lifting eye, so I borrow the eye off my neighbors Johnson 50hp when I need to lift my motor. His lifting eye is fairly thin aluminum and works just fine.

I doubt that the mfg would put it on the motor if there was any doubt about it's strength.

I have lifted my 1978 70hp Johnson by that lifting eye many times. Not a problem at all. Rent an engine cherry picker to lift it. I myself use a Harbor Freight 1 ton chain hoist hung either from my garage rafters or from the 6x8 hoist pole that extends out the front of my garage above the door.

I use a HF 2-ton "come along". I've inadvertently lifted the stern of the boat(motor attached) with the lifting eye, so it's def strong enough.

Well looks like I am going to be lifitng the engine off tomorrow to begin replacing the transom wood. Looks like I will be using the lift ring after all. My partner in this project thinks that is the best idea as that is what it was designed for. Wish me luck!
