Greetings,

I am working on getting my old 1958 Evinrude fisherman 5.5 hp motor running. I am going to use it as a kicker. I need to replace the starter rope. Can someone please tell me what diameter rope to get and give detailed instructions on how to install the new rope. I have had the starter rope off before and after putting it back on I pull out about a foot of rope before it catches. I know the rope hole is not lined up correctly as it is now. There are 2 markings on the piece that holds the rope that tell me where to line things up, but I am not sure how to do it. The more details the better as I do not really know the names of the parts I am dealing with here. Can I re-grease the spring/coil with regular marine grease?

Thanks,

Pull out the rope till there is no more coiled on the pulley clamp the pulley to the top with Vise-Grips or a C-clamp not to tight just enough to hold it .Remove the rope and thread the new back through and out the eyelet put on the handle and release the clamp will wind itself back up adjust by moving the knot dont worry about the marks or the length as long as there is enough there to start it and still have a little .
