Mechanic told me that #6 valve (intake I believe) was tuliped and some other ones weren't seating too well. He said that both sides really ought to have valve job and is sending them out in trade for reman heads + $700.

When the new heads come in, what's the process for installing? Is this just another gasket + bolt on operation as with risers and manifolds or does it involve more complex steps than that. My shop manual is still on order so I am trying to get a general feel for what is involved and if this is somthing I ought to attempt myself or leave to the pros?

Did you do the disassembly?

It is probably not a good job to start learning on. There is a lot at stake.

But if you must - Clean EVERYTHING so that you can inspect the pistons/bores/decks/threads/waterjackets/oil ports etc in DETAIL, if you miss a hairline crack in the deck or a scratched bore you will be doing all again in a short while.

Double check that the correct gaskets are supplied. Double check that you won't cancel any warranty by doing the job yourself. Do not vary from the listed torques.

Just before re-assembly, clean the deck again, one little speck could ruin your day.

No, I did not remove them myself. The mechanic has done that and sent them in for replacement. I was just thinking maybe i could save a few bucks and gain a little experiance if I did it myself.

Its a 1988 (5.7 Mercruiser) so there's absolutely no warrenty to worry about. In terms of cleaning the surfaces and preparing the head and getting the bolts down..I am confident that i can handle all that. My greater concern is what goes on with rocker arms and valves and camshaft alignments and anything like that that could be involved.. and that is where I am still unclear.

clean head surfaces, install heads, clean the threads on the head bolts and apply sealer(Permatex avation liquid etc.)torque to specs, oil or grease rockers and balls, install pushrods, install rockers, tighten down untill 1/4 inch of stud is above the nut or set the particular cylinder on firing stroke and adjust untill you cannot spin the pushrod and go 1/2 turn more.the hot setting is 3/4 down from "0" lash.Unless you have removed the can and lifters its not an issue.install intake manifold and ROP(rest of parts), fire it up and check timing.
