How to install flywheel

My struggles never seem to end. At this rate I’m not going to get the family out until winter!

Short story, I had a bit of a falling out with my mechanic so I paid him for the work he had done and retrieved my un-assembled motor.

He had removed the flywheel by unbolting it from the flywheel hub and leaving the hub on the crankshaft (not sure if that makes sense).....The flywheel is bolted to what I would call the flywheel hub which has the key for lining up with the crankshaft. So, as I mentioned, he removed the flywheel from the hub. There are a couple of oil pen markings on the flywheel it these don’t appear to line up with anything else. Possibly trying to line up with the starter????
In the picture you can see the two sets of white markings. But based on the bolt holes of the hub (where the flywheel plate bolt holes match up with the hub bolt holes) it doesn’t appear the markings match up with the starter.

Any suggestions on how I can get the flywheel in the correct position on the hub?

It’s a 1996 40hp Mariner Magnum

Any support is very much appreciated

Look at the rust stain marks.-----That is one way to line it up.
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve spent the good part of an hour trying to find matches. Unfortunately the hub is non rusting, so nothing is matching up.

Easy stuff. Remove the spark plugs. Turn the crankshaft until the top piston is at top dead center(TDC). A screwdriver is sufficient to test for TDC. Put the flywheel over the hub and turn it until the timing mark indicates TDC. Install the bolts, with blue locktite.
