Hi, I have a 1987 GM 4.3 Mercruiser i/o alpha I

I will be replacing the bellows with a purchased kit, besides the flexible extension, alignment tool and the hinge tool, are there any other tools that I will need? Also, while everything is apart, I am going to replace the impeller. Is there anything else that I should look at or replace?

Thank you.

How long have you had this boat? Does the gimbal make any noise? As long as it is all apart, you will want to check it and if it DID make any nise, replace it. Then you will need a puller and slide hammer and the gimbal installation flange for the allignment tool.
Can I assume that the kit came with a new shift cable boot and water intake line? If not, those are areas of concern also. If you buy your own water line, be careful not to cut it to long as it will kink when you lower the drive, and don't cut it to short either as it will pull off when raising the drive for trailering. As long as your there, right.?
You will also want to check the u-joints and if I remember correctly, my '87 had grease zirks. Check all the O-rings, I can't remember how many are on the Merc, my new Volvo has four. Look at the condition of the spline and shaft, clean it up a bit if there is any rust.
Remember when putting the drive back on to put some grease on the splines.
Might as well go ahead check and/or replace your anodes now also.
Good luck

HI, I've had the boat for almost three years. I have been noticing a slight hum; I think it's coming from the gimbal. The kit does come with all of the boots and hoses. What kind of puller do I need? Like a three jaw puller? Thanks very much for all the info!

You can use a threaded puller that will pull the bearing as you tighten the nut, or you can use a slide hammer. They both work.

If you use a threaded puller, have something large enough to protect the housing. You DO NOT want to mess that up.
I use a small two jaw puller with large flats that fit inside the bearing and a slide hammer. About three whacks and it's out. Be extremely careful when putting the jaws in the bearing. The grease seal is right behind it. After the bearing is out, you can feel inside to see if grease has leaked behind the seal. If it has, replace it also. If it has not...good to go.

Another thing. When inserting the new gimbal, make sure to align the grease hole on the bearing with the hole in the housing.
