Hi, i have a 1980 evinrude 35hp ecsm. Im installing a trigger, they only have one. Do you want to get the edge as close to the flywheel magnets as possible without the trigger being hit? The outboard ignition troubleshooter seems to suggest you slide them closer to the crankshaft in order to get spark. I would of thought that further away from the crankshaft ie closer to the flywheel magnet would be how to make spark:

From outboard ignition:

Loosen the two mounting screws on the sensor and the nut located in the epoxy on the outside of the heat shield of the timer base.
Slide the sensor in toward the crankshaft approximately 0.005? at a time.
Coat the face of the sensor with machinists bluing or equivalent.
Install the flywheel according to the service manual and crank the engine over.
Remove the flywheel and check to see if the trigging magnet struck the sensor face.
If the ignition fired, finger tight the nut on the outside of the heat shield and coat it with RTV.
If still no fire, slide the sensor in another 0.005? and repeat steps C through F

Oh i see there a magnets on the inner bit of the flywheel too. But what is loosening that nut all about and do you want the sensor to touch the flywheel?

Are you sure?? I thought that sensor was close to the magnets in the outer circumfrence of the flywheel. There should be machined edges on the armature plate where the coil and sensor mount. The sensor should be flush with those machined edges. It is designed for use of a special circular tool that fits over the edges and you slide the coil & sensor up aganst the ring. That makes it easy, but is not totally necessary. You can do it by sight and feel. I happen to make those rings.

Hi, il have a look in the morning and report back, its dark here now in New Zealand
It did sound weird to me as its exactly as you describe but the Outboard ignition Trouble shooter does say adjust towards the crankshaft for spark, which throws me

IMG_1602.jpgIve had a look this morning. There is no obvious magnet on the centre hub but it does have a magnetic pull on the areas to the east west if the magnets on the outer a north south. Its much weaker than the trigger but is pulling towards the crankshaft rather than away. I dont know if its enough to trigger the trigger, note screw held up in photo.
what do you think?

Re: How to install a trigger 35hp

I got this offoutboard ignition troubleshooter, it still confuses me
The trigger or timerbase (term varies by manufacturer) is basically the same thing as a distributor. This component is also mounted under the flywheel and also uses the flywheel for it's operation. The center hub on the flywheel also contains magnets mounted in a 360 degree configuration. Instead of generating electrical current though, these magnets simply tell the trigger/timerbase what position the crankshaft is at. As the magnets pass by the pickup sensors, the trigger/timerbase sends a signal to the power pack, telling it the precise moment to release its stored energy to the specific cylinder. The spark timing is controlled exclusively by the trigger/timerbase. As the component rotates with increase or decrease of the throttle, so does the park timing. Smooth and accurate movement of this device is critical to a good running motor.

The sensor goes toward the outer magnets. Follow F_R's advice.

Re: How to install a trigger 35hp

Thanks, thats what i have done and she is sparking well.
As an interesting side note, the reason why i was getting spark on only the top cylinder wasnt due to coil or powerpack problems but was because of a tear in the white wire from the trigger allowing a little current through but hardly any., I thought it was a faulty trigger but i tested the wires with a multimeter once removed and there was the problem
NB This unit has one trigger for the two spark plugs

Follow up: Even though it was now firing on both cylinders it was running rough and not getting any power/accereleration although it would start first time. I put in a secondhand powerpack and it now goes great. Apparently a bad trigger can ruin a powerpack so i guess the bad signal from the trigger had worn out the powerpack
