Re: how to install a amp gauge
It really helps to have a schematic for doing this.

Here is what you want to accomplish.
1) The starter motor does NOT run through the meter
2) Everything else does.

I have a 1970 85hp Johnson. Here is how I did it:

I ran a 10 Guage wire from the battery to the ammeter.
Then another 10 guage wire from the other terminal of the ammeter
to the fuse panel.

I ran a 12 guage wire from the fuse panel to the same terminal as
the +12V wire from the motor wiring harness.

Now the tricky part. Inside the motor compartment the 9 amp alternator went
through the rectifier to the +12V battery lug on the starter solinoid. The Wiring
harness +12V went from there to the ignition switch via a 12 Guage wire.
I disconnected the alternator and the wiring harness +12V wire from the starter
solinoid and tapped it off. At this point the alternator current rather than going
directly to the battery via the big fat wire, goes through the +12v wiring harness
wire to the switch. The switch lug is jumpered over to the fuse panel (as stated
before). For a 9 amp alternator the 12guage wire in the wiring harness is sufficent,
if the motor had a larger capacity alternator, I would have ran another 10 guage
wire in it's place and not used the internal wiring harness.

Anyway thats it, hope this convoluted explanation works for you.

Mike
