I've got a computer in my office that we mainly use to do billing to insurance companies via internet.

Although we log off whichever program application we are using, we usually don't make a practice of shutting the computer off. However, if the cleaning crew bumps the mouse it wakes up and turns on the monitor which they then sometimes shut off.

Not sure if it's related but our recent problem is that once windows loads in with all the program icons, the computer quickly flashes a dialog box which disappears after about a 1/2 second and then times out. Therefore, we can not click any program icons to use the computer.

We're thinking the computer has contracted a virus and wondering about how to remedy the problem.

Helpful advice appreciated.

Kevin

Check your MSCONFIG startup file. Some program listed in startup is wreaking havoc.

If you are running ME or XP try using restore to earlier date.

Those are good starting points.

Bob

Advice and instructions will depend on what operating system you have 98, 2000, XP?

As for a virus, the only real way to know if you have one and get rid of it is to have a good antivirus software package and keep it up to date with the latest virus definitions, which are released no less than weekly. McAfee and Norton Antivirus are the most commonly used and either would be a fine choice. You can also get a free scanner from McAfee (called Stinger) that will scan for the most recent 150 or so viruses by going here:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

The brief explanation you have given does not really sound like a virus to me, but running the stinger and purcahsing a permanent antivirus solution is still a must.

Let us know what OS you have and we can recommend so further possibilities.

When you start up the computer there is a way to start in "Safe Mode" You are going to have to do this and select a limited number of processes in order to get the system up and running. Once you do you can go online and download an antivirus program and scan for any viruses.

You can obtain a good free antivirus program that is updated regularly here AVG Antivirus

You should also have a good fire wall to prevent someone from stealing information off your computer.

You can get a free version of Zone Alarm here Zone Alarm

You may also have other problems with trojan horses or worms that many antivirus programs cannot detect. For this you can use Pest Patrol which can be found here. Pest Patrol
