Re: how to fly-fish? Cameron graphite fly rod?

I learned to fly fish 4 years ago when I was 13 with an instructor. I can't explain it the greatest but start the line short and work it out slow and never go past 10 or 2 unless your ready to put it in the water is the way I was taught and it has worked for me. Hopefully someone will come along that can give better advice

Using fly rods are all about feel........long slow casting patterns, the more line out, the slower you go.. momentum, feel it.. have fun!

A 7/8 rod is fairly stiff and it will handle fish w/o problem. I like a lighter weight for the smaller streams since I mostly like the trout fishing.

A great place to start is actually on a football field or baseball diamond......... away from any overhead obstructions and trees. If you can take a lesson that will help.

Trout fishing is a true balance of pole, line, tippet, fly/lure and practice.

...and practice.
I don't know how many days I would just stand in the yard, pull back and hold at 2 o'clock, launch forward and snap the wrist at 10 o'clock. Took me forever to get a good groove. Dad could lay 60ft out without too much trouble and I'd still be buggy-whippin'.

Several different casting techniques to lear for different environments (overhead, side cast, roll cast, etc.). Panfishing or Bass fishing from a dock or boat is another good way to get used to the rod. Trout fishing you wind up learning the rod and the fish together. Trout have a lighter touch and you play 'em a little different.

After your first day standing in the river watching nature do it's thing … you'll love it.

A lot depends on the type rod you are using. Some place on the rod it will give you a recommended line type and size to use. It could be weight forward, level line or whatever, with both floating and sinking lines as well. I used level floating line weight and of course a tapered tippet. So with that setup you are throwing the line instead of the bait/lure/jig like conventional casting. It takes a little time to get the hang of it, but once you do, you can put that bait (for lack of a better word) any place you want too. And you can roll that line under brush and hang-overs so easy. I like it but haven't fish that way now in years. Need to start back myself!

You are in an ideal situation to become a good fly caster as you have no experience and thus no bad habits to break. An hour or two at the most with a good fly fisherman who is also a good instructor is all that is needed. I have had the pleasure being around and fishing with the likes of Lefty Kreh, Joe Humphreys, George Harvey and others and every time they help m break bad habits that I learned at a young age being self taught.

It doesn’t matter what rod or line you are using to start if it is properly set up, the technique is the same. I have seen Joe put out 50 feet of line in a demonstration using a 12” piece of pvc pipe with the line fed through it. It is a matter of timing, not brute strength.

I used to instruct fly casting at a camp in the summer to youngsters and I always looked forward to the week when the girls were there rather than the boys. I had girls who in ten minutes were casting perfect loops. The boys seemed to want to cast farther than each other and would end up looking like an old lady swinging a broom at a bunch of mad hornets.

Good luck in learning, you will find it enjoyable.
