Re: how to find out my outboard shaft length

Your engine serial number is not showing the length like they sometimes do so you will have to Measure it.

This should help show you how,
Long Shaft Outboards and Short Shaft Outboard Motors

Or,
1) Measure the height of the boat's transom from the center down to the lowest point of the hull. This will tell you the height of the shaft for the outboard.

2) Measure the outboard motor from the top of the mounting bracket clamp to the bottom of the cavitation plate over the propeller.

3) Compare the two numbers. The height of the outboard's shaft must be the same height or a little longer than the boat's transom.

Look at the model number. If the second or third digit is an "L" it's a long shaft (20"). If there is no L, it's a short shaft (15").

MERCURY - ( 15 H.P. (2006 ))
Serial No: 1B281025 Model No: 1F15203FD Parts Catalog No: 803183006

Thanks Jim, I know the model number means certain things to Merc, the only things that I know about it is the third and fourth number is the engine horsepower the full number is most of the engine part number and the one or two letters at the end somehow tells us the year if you knew the code of the letters that i'm not sure of. Looking at it now it seems the F would stand for four stroke and I'll only guess the 20 will be the length.

Sorry, I meant the model code that is on the ID plate (or sticker). for instance , if the code reads 25 ELPT, it would be a 25 hp, electric start (E) long shaft (L) power trim (PT). If the model code was 15 M, the outboard would be 15 hp, manual start, and short shaft, as there is no designated letter for short.

That's okay and excellent thought about the sticker. Running his serial number also looks like this (Service Literature for MERCURY 4 STROKE 15 M 4)

For an idea of what the sticker looks like that Jim's mentioning, Have a look at the second photo in this link. http://forums.iboats.com/mercury-ma...er-series-maintenance-637707.html#post4485049

Exactly, FT. The example indicates that it is a 2001 115 hp electric start long shaft power trim with oil injection (wow, that was a mouthful!)
