How to disconect shift linkage from 2001 50 hp johnson to replace water pump?

I have remove five lower unit bolts but cannot find where to disconnect shifter rod. I have a general repair manual but not specific to my 2001 Crestliner with 50 hp Johnson.

Don't think that will help, I'm trying to remove lower unit, have removed 5 lower unit bolts now how do you disconnect shift linkage and in what gear... neutral, forward or reverse?

In the diagram at the very top of the shift rod there is a connection you need to undo. The connection is under the bottom carb. and a real bugger to get at. You will need some help when reinstalling it for sure. One poster said the best way to access it is to remove/drop the lower cowl and I would look into that as I had to remove quite a few parts to get at mine(1995 40HP). Even with the parts removed I was very frustrated trying to get at. That's why dropping the cowl seems like such a good idea to me but I have not looked at how to do that as my impeller is still new. Thanks for the info, diagram turned out to be a great help also. Dropping lower cowl was the answer, just needed smaller hands as mine are a bit large. Removed bolts at latches and one in lower center by the trim tilt.

Funny thing about those water pumps is that as soon as you do one....they all get a little easier. But that fist one really....well you know!!!
