1984 Rude E35ELCRR I'm getting conflicting information on how many poles this engine is. I called Faria and he told me it's 12 but I saw the following in a post here.

("According to the Teleflex Instrument Technical Reference I have, all Evinrude/Johnson motors have 12 pole alternators, with the exception of the under 70 hp 2 cylinder, 2 strokes which have 10 pole alternators. For teleflex tachometers you would set the selector switch to 6p for a 12 pole alternator".)

At this point I would like to learn how to count them myself. If it is something in the flywheel it would be easy because I have an old but working flywheel off this engine.

Thanks
Jake

Easiest way is look at the rectifier. If it has two yellow wires, it is a 12 pole (6 pulse). Three yellow wires, it is a 10 pole (5 pulse) I happen to know yours is a three yellow because I have the same motor on my boat.

Count the magnets in your flywheel. 6 equals 12 poles. 10 equals 5 pole.
