how to connect shift rod to dog clutch

I'm helping my nephew with a 1986 85hp suzuki. It was overheating so we pulled the lower unit (LU) to replace the impeller. When we went to put it back together he pulled up on the shift rod to get it into neutral using a screw driver through the hole at the top of the shift rod. The shift rod came unhitched from the inside and pulled out of the LU until something on the shift rod hit some the top of the whole in the casing. Now we can't get it reseated properly so it's not in deep enough and of course because it's not attached it won't cause the transmission to shift. Any ideas? Does someone have a diagram of the inside so we know what where the rod has to seat in order for the ball/spring mechanism to lock it into place?

Additionally we noticed when we removed the LU that the shift mechanism was difficult to move up and down from reverse, to neutral to forward. It also appears that this shift rod is bent.

Any help would be appreciated.

It did not come all the way out but it is no longer connected to the mechanism that moves the dog clutch. I'm trying to find a drawing of how its attached and I can seem to find one.

hope you have it fixed by now but if not mine has a phillips head screw on the side of lower unit near the intake screen that holds the shift yolk and if you took that screw out that may be the problem sometimes you can look back in that hole and get it lined back up hope this helps

You need to pull the prop shaft in order to reinstall the shift shaft. Better hope the shift shaft is not bent as it has been discontinued.
