How to check tilt trim oil level

I had a clump of some kind of fluid in my garage from the rear end of my boat. I checked my Nissan 70 H.P. motor lower unit oil and it is fine, and i checked my 6 H.P kicker motor lower unit oil and it is also fine. Both motors have clean oil in them with no water at all. The oil I saw on the floor is a grey color, and it is pretty thick compared to the lower unit oil. I am now thinking it came out of my tilt trim on my Nissan motor, model # NS70A2. It is gray in color but appears to be no water in it. It is pretty thick but I never saw the oil or fluid in the tilt trim unit on any boat before, so I really do not know for sure if that is where this fluid came from. But what else could it be??

I looked diligently for any signs of a leak on the hydrolic lines and hosed and pistons etc. etc. and did not see any signs of this fluid anywhere except on the floor in the garage. How do I go about checking the level and also adding to it if needed? The tilt/trim is working good, but is making a slight squeaking noise when almost all the way up on its way up. Thanks!

The tilt is really easy to check fill and Bleed.. Basically there should be a plastic oring sealed plug that is your high oil level and fill port. My Honda uses ATF fluid not sure about your Nissan but I suspect it'd work just fine as it's a simple hydraulic system. Basically open the port fill it until it spills out. Then cycle it up and down all the way to pump it around the system and force air out It'll spill out while cycling a bit but not alot. Just top it off when fully extended with the boat level. Once closed make sure it cycles fully both directions (up and down)

It's probably not from there I suspect it's a soupy greasy mess that got pumped through when greasing the nipples.

Or its actually motor oil through the vent system If you smell your engine oil for a gassy smell it could be contaminated with fuel from the pressure in the tank building and it just forcing fuel into your motor and expelling the foamy cruddy mess . Could be, hard to say from here

Thanks Jon,

I did smell the stuff and there definately is no fuel odor to it, so i thought it may be the fluid from the tilt/trim. I found a few videos on how to check the fluid level. (I guess I should have checked there first). They tell exactly how to do it step by step, and it is as you described. Still not sure where the oil came from, but it is gray and thicker than oil but not as thick as grease.
Thanks again!!
