Ok...I know nothing about engines. My 60 Hp Mercury does not start. I keep trying to prime, choke, and start it but it doesn't ever "catch".

My gut is telling me that the plugs aren't sparking. I've put brand new ones in, but the engine still doesn't start.

Does anyone have a good (safe) way to see if I'm even getting sparks??

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: How To Check Spark

Take the plugs out.. put the boot back on one plug, and hold the body of the plug hard against the head while you turn the engine over.. (you can use something insulated to do that.)

you can also use one of your old plugs, and open the gap right up.. see how far your spark can jump..

While you are checking for reasons, you should check that your carbs are getting fuel..

If you are getting a spark, try squirting a bit of premix fuel down the carb throats.. if the engine starts firing, you have a fuel delivery problem..

Hope that helps get you started.

regards

Frank

Thanks for responding Frank.

What does "hard against the head mean"?

I mean, you take the plug out of the head..

put the plug lead boot back on the top of the plug, then lay the plug sideways against the top of the head, and push it hard against the head.. (with a screwdriver or something insulated)

Then turn the motor over and watch the plug gap, you should see a nice big spark.. probably a blue one, but not necessarily.

does that make sense???

regards

Frank
