Re: How to Check Carter Injector Pump Pressure?
be aware that ALL fuel cells manufactured before march of 2010 were painted inside.
Efuels are eating the paint and causing pump failures and severly clogged regulator screens.
I am going to write to boatUS about the issue and see if they will do a write up similar to the XDP bellows failure article.
fuel cells made after march of 2010 have a diffrent coating that doesnt disolve.
there is a tech bulliten about the coating change and if its still under warrenty they will replace it,if not your sheet outta luck.
I dont think thats right at all.
Rodbolt - thanks for the info. You are right about the paint. When I went to replace the fuel filter, it was very hard to get off, and the new one didn't seem to seat right (and subsequently leaked fuel!). I chalked it up to the Sierra filter I used, and bought a VP, which had the same problem. I looked at the filter housing base (where the filter seal contacts) and discovered that it was painted, and half of the paint was missing. Flecks of paint were in the in the filter, and I suspect got into the fuel cell. I scraped the paint off off the housing base and the filter sealed fine.
Now, based on what you posted, the internals of the cell are likely clogged and possibly the pressure regulator too. Do know if the cell can be "backflushed" with compressed air to clear out any clog? What about the pressure regulator? Also, I'm still unclear how much noise the low pressure pump should be making. Please let me know how I can find the tech bulletin you're referring to, and let me know if I can assist with your letter or write my own to BoatUS and any other safety organizations since this is definitely a safety issue and should be investigated. So far I'm unconvinced about any quality advantage of VP over MercCruiser.
