How to check a prop hub?

Good day to all,

I just purchased a 1983 50 Hp Merc (4 cylinder). It starts and runs well. When I go to full throttle, it bogs a little. I think that may be a timing issue. I have a new gas line and connectors and I replaced the plugs with L78V instead of the L76V that were in it. According to the new Teleflex tach I installed (I used the Merc wire harness from the remote box), it runs up to 4000 RPM. My book said it should be 5000-5500 RPM. I have noticed that when it takes off the prop spins out and acts like it has a second gear. I have moved the motor all the way in and a couple holes out and it still does it. My Ski boat acts this way when I take off and have it trimmed up. The prop is stainless and it has a ding or two in it. I was wondering how to check the hub or maybe move to another pitch prop. I can see a 14 on the prop hub but I can't not find the pitch. Where do I look for it?

Thanks,

Terry G.

The 14 must be the pitch cause the prop is not 14 inches.

tg

Hi Terry

It realy sounds like you spun the hub. Usually it shows, when accelerating hard from still, it sounds like it is an automatic. Lowering pressure on thottle some, it seems like the prog gets grib in water, exactly as when the prop cavitates and you trim down or releases trottle a bit. Often the prop gets a little off center, to be seen when you observe it rotation by hand in neutral, motor up. When you pull prop you can see the rubber insert from the back, they are sometimes melted some or rubbled. It sounds like you are overpropped, or your motor isnt getting fuel enough. Timing shouldnt be that much off, making you loose so manny rpm.

A word of caution here. Mercury is very picky about its timing settings. I'm having a flashback of when I advanced an old 50 hp 3 degrees (set it to the wrong mark). Burned a hole in the piston top that would rival any drill bit!
