Re: how to change the oil from 1972 85hp johnson out board
the only oil you change on that engine is the Lower end oil....where the prop is....you will see 2 slotted screwheads not the small phillips..the slotted ones...undo the bottom and then the top one....let it drain.....make sure you get new plug gaskets to replace the old ones..if you dont..chances are you will leak water in the gear box....
when you drain the oil it should be like oil...not like a frappe and coffee colored...thats a sign water got in....
but get new O gaskets they are like a dollar each tops...
make sure you get the old gaskets out of the plug holes if they are not on the screw plugs.....
now to fill it....get a oil pump at most auto stores..it screws on the top of the oil jug...its the easiest way...then get outboard lower end gear oil....get in a Quart so you can use the pump......OK I re read the post and seen the year...I believe you have a elctro shift in your motor..so you take Type C oil..get it a Evinrude dealer or on line here at Iboats...

screw in the adapter in the lower hole...pump till oil comes out the top hole...replace the plug in top hole...then unscrew the pump from bottom hole...replace the plug there..with the NEW gaskets on both plugs by the way....
snug the plugs up good....your done....total time 20 minutes tops...
MAKE SURE you get NEW gaskets for the DRAIN PLUGS...
