This is interesting... The damage to the lower unit I didn't do. I picked up the boat this way. On my first run out I launched and recovered in shallow water. I think thats how I damaged the prop (it was new!). Can I use the boat this way?

UPDATE 7/18 - 06:50 ET: I was able to post the pics, what about the lower unit damage near the anode?

From your other post It sounds like you damged your prop.

You need to get it repaired or buy a new prop before you use your boat again. An out of balance props will ruin your drive.

When you post next time, put in all the info so that we don't have to look at your old posts to find the whole story. :)

What about the damage near the anode, is it OK to leave like this? The anode feels loose but doesnt come out.

You could try it like that but you will not be happy with the performance. And, like Bruce said, you with end up with a bent shaft or wearing out the gears.

The prop looks like it grinded on the boat ramp.

I think it was just a bad camera angle, here is the side view:

No, not a bad camera angle. There is less skeg there than is missing . . .

You could put a new or repaired prop on there and it will go, but it should be fixed. The skeg is supposed to extend below the maximum diameter of the propeller.

You can go to a reputable welding shop and have a new skeg welded on. That prop damage looks pretty rough as if it were run along the concrete of the boat ramp!

Mine ha a skeg that apears to be an aftermarket one that is screwed onto the outdrive It is made of stainless steel, or is that a normal thing?

Take the whole thing to a good prop shop that can rework the prop, bottom end, skeg, missing anode chunk etc. or replace the bottom end of the outdirve. You might be able to pick up a used one or a rebuilt. There is entirely too much damage to use this as is and I can only imagine there is other internal compromise too, shaft seals, gears etc. In the long run get it fixed correctly before you cause more collateral damage.

Re: How seriously is this prop/lower damaged?

Not to hi-jack your thread, but I have a related question.

My skeg is worn a bit. It is just enough that the edge of the prop extends about 1/8 of an inch past it. I have been trolling for some bass and got shallow a few times. Enough to ding the edge of the prop.

Would a new skeg that extends beyond the prop stop this prop damage?

Ahh, thats exactly what I have on mine, it is real strong and looks great even after running shallow chaising bass and pike a few times.

Get a Skeg guard, especially if you think you'll be trolling for submerged obstacles and rocks. It's a damn good band-aid.

Skeg guards are good band-aids until another strike, then you will be buying a lower unit. Best advicegiven here is get everything repaired properly the first time. While you're having everything welded, have them fill in the holes where the whale tail went.

Where did the whale tale go? Is that here? It looks like something either broke off or someone drilled a hole.
