How often do you change out your lower gear oil?

Here's another in the series of my "stupid newbe questions". This weekend I was finally taught how to change out my lower unit oil on my 50hp OB by Damon. I also bought a shop manual for my motor and read in the maintainence section that I was suppose to be changing my lower unit oil every 25hours. Yikes! Well needless to say when we opened the drain, the oil was pitch black and oozing out of like melting plastic. I've put at least 200 hours on it since I bought it this year and have never done it. Who knows how long before the owner before me did it also. We also found metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug.

Now that I've learned how to do it, I'll take care of it more religously.

How often do others here usually do this? Is doing it every 25 hours too excessive? Because I've heard of others doing it every 100 hours, and then some that say they do it bi annually.

I change mine about every 150 hours (which is twice a season). You will find small metal particles on the magnet each change, but big shavings are trouble.

In your case I would take it out for 5or6 runs of a couple of hours and check it again .if it's dark again change it with new gasket rings under the screws

I do it annually. In the fall, before I put the boat in storage. I think the biggest problem is if the oil is 'milky' in appearance. That means water is making it past your seals.

With the quality oils, and magnetic pickups on the screws, I think you are save going 100-150 hours without any problem. I would think changing it more often is just assurance that you don't have a blown seal. It certainly is an easy enough job to do frequently.

fp

I admit, I only do mine in the fall once I pull it out of the water. The oil has always been in okay shape, but I should probably do it twice a season, as I do use the boat at least once a week, and that lower unit sits submerged the whole season....
