It depends on how fast you want to go. I used a 4hp as a trolling motor on my 17' center console.

The 4HP motor will move that jon boat O.K. for fishing, but not much speed at all, maybe 5 or 8 MPH. Just depends on what you need. I've run a 4HP and a 3HP on my 17' canoe for years and it'll run maybe 5MPH. Probably a 10HP motor would be better for your boat.

Can a johson 4 hp be able to handle over 500 lbs on a jonboat?

I hope you have a pretty large jon boat. >500 pounds would be courting disaster on most jons. Wear your life jackets.

It will push it but don't make plans on any speed records.

I have a 2HP on a 10' Jonboat and I can make almost 5MPH.

The reason I ask is we had around 500 lbs in the boat and we barely moved. I think there might be something wrong with our motor. We paddled the jonboat faster with oars....

I rented a 14' steel utility with a 5 hp Honda last year, had 4 people and a dog to tour the lake. Was very slow 2 or 3 mph but it did it. Thankfully it was a small lake. It was still very slow with just me in it, but how much does a steel boat weigh.:)

Re: How much weight can 4hp Push?

my lake neighbors used an old 4hp to push a smallish old school ~18' pontoon around for years. Often they'd have 5 or 6 guys, lawn chairs and a cooler or two on it and just tool around shore fishing as they went. It didn't set any speed records, but it certainly kept them moving at a few mph all day long... sounded like the motor was set at about 1/2 throttle. He's got a 10 hp on it now, but they still putt around at the same speed, probably need a bit less throttle to do it. It's just not worth the extra gas/noise to get an extra mph or two since they're mostly just fishing anyways.

Does you're have the weedless prop and tilted lower unit on it? It seems that those might get a bit less "bite" on the water than a standard one, so maybe that's an issue.

was the motor revving? Could have a spun prop. That would feel kinda like a clutch slipping on a car- .
