Maybe break this down and see if it makes sense but also depends on the shops hourly rate. I'll assume the drive would still be on the boat.

1-drain gear lube and remove drive; probably remove props first (at least I do)
2-pressure test and hopefully perform some kind of diagnosis on a possible leak
3-re-install drive with new $8 gasket kit, fill with gear lube (3 quarts), install props-should grease shaft also, run boat and test for proper operation
They're probably saying this is a couple hours labor plus parts so.....maybe that's about right for your area.

So, at $300 . . . you would have to ask yourself (and the mechanic) does it really need to be done?

Your welcome. Thanks for the kind remarks :)since for me it's not that often I'm able to help someone and answer a question as I'll never have the experience, abilities, brain cells:facepalm:, electrons spinning in the right direction of a Don, Chris, Bondo, QC, Bvt, Jb, Bd, Sd, etc. etc. etc.
...how do they remember all this stuff???....I have to think hard on what my wife made for dinner 2 nights ago....
