I have just purchased a 19 ft. glassply, actually a 17ft with an extended transom similar to the whaler mount system used by boston whaler in the mid 80s.The boat is completely open with a center console. Is anyone familiar with this hull? The boat came with a 70 h.p. yamaha and i would like to upgrade to at least a 90 perhaps a 115. The boat is rated for a 120 max. Would a 115 be too much for this hull?

Re: how much power

In my opinion, Get as close to the MRH (Max Recomended Horsepower) as you can.

Craig

Re: how much power

In your first post on this thread you stated its rated for max 120hp. I would say that is how much hp the hull can handle. At least from a "safe" and possible legal point of view.

BL...

Re: how much power

See my message in the other section you posted in...

As for the power issue. Mine came with a 70 hp Mercury. Top speed of about 28 mph.

If I had the chance to repower, I would do it in a heartbeat. Here are a couple of problems that you may be faced with. At a top speed of 28 mph, that hull will shake your kidneys into pieces in rough water. If you are mostly on glass-like water, then I would power up to the max.

My reason for re-power, would be to move to a 4 stroke, and to get a little more torque than I have now. I find myself in very rough water at times (straight of juan de fuca, Washington) and the 70 hp, won't spin me on top of waves, or turn me and accelerate quickly enough.

Just my 2 cents

-Jason

Re: how much power

As owner of a max rated boat I'd say 'Take the most power you can and will pay for within the rating' and be a responsible boater when out. It is great to have the power available and with the right prop you'll get good mpg and comfort (low rpm/noise)while cruising.

When considering 4 vs 2 stroke, notice the weight as 4 strokes are heavier end the hp may have to be kept well below max. rated.

Obviously Tohatsu claim to have made a new invention that makes 2-strokes fulfill environmental rules so this should be considered along with the facts before choosing make.

Re: how much power

This is one time that MORE is ALWAYS BETTER. I would put a motor on thats the maximum the boat builder says. You can never have enough power and if someday you need it, you might regret you did not opt for the bigger motor
