I have just purchased a 1985 glassply listed as a 19 ft. but atcually a 17 ft. with an extended transom with the engine mounted 2 ft. behind the transom.this is very similar to the whaler drive used by boston whalers in the mid 80s. Does anybody know anything about these hulls? It is all open with a center console. It came with a 70 h.p. yamaha but i would like to upgrade to at least a 90 h.p. perhaps a 115. the hull is rated for a 120 max.Would a 115 be too much?

Howdy, Hop.

Rated for 120hp? 115 would be an excellent power level.

Most boats perform well with 70% of rated power and okay with 50%. 115 would be 96% and give you to within a hair of the best performance your boat can give.

Good luck. :)

Re: how much power?

I hope you're still monitoring your post.

Here is the best that I can do... Questar was a canadian company that imported to the US through Glass Ply. I have no idea how may styles of boat they make. From the sound of it, mine has the same hull, but it is an enclosed cabin. The model number is ph17.

I will guarantee you will find nothing on these boats. I have looked. We have had ours since new in 1987. I have only seen 1 other Questar, but it was not enclosed like mine.

They are a great boat. I have had more comments on mine over the years than I can count....

By the way, they are no longer in business. I don't know when they stopped making them, but you can't find them listed anywhere, not even NADA.

-Jason
