How much play is there supposed to be in steering

I have a 2007 Yamaha VX Sport. I was wondering how much play there is supposed to be in the steering column? I have about a half inch to 3/4 inch play up and down. Is this normal? If not, what should I look for to fix?

Anybody have any knowledge with these machines? I just bought it used and does not seem right to me.
