How much movement on th shifter with the lower end off should there be?or port to aft

It is mercruiser 3.0 mr outdrive.The outdrive is removed and I have the shifter foot on it.I know that straight ahead is supposed to be forward-port to get reverse and aft to get neutral.Mine is in center for forward slighly left neutral and all the way left for reverse thanks phil
