First, I think this is the best thing I have ever found on the .net. Many thanks to all who contribute.
Now.....
I have a Sea Nymph 14R aluminum boat, max rated for a 25hp.
I am not a "speed deamon" but would like to get up on a plane.(I am running a older 4hp Yamaha 2 stroke). :(
I am seriously looking at Yamaha and Tohatsu/Nissan, but the T/N 25hp is a three cylinder and seems, to me anyway, quite a lot of motor for a 14' aluminum. Would the T/N 18hp get the boat up on the water? Should I be concerned with the additional weight? Yea, and the price difference is a factor too... :p
Also, while I'm here, what are your thoughts on getting electric start on portable tiller outboards?
Thanks again and,
Merry Christmas to all!!

hi there the maximum hp is what the coast guard recommeds and it should not be exceeded ever many reasons for that! the 18 should give you the performance you require

Hello, I live in Orlando and fish by you all the time in the ocean and at stick marsh. I rebuild engines and repair them. Go with the yamaha. Parts are much less expensive. Tohatsu are good motors but parts are very high. Just price a water pump on your 25 tohatsu and compare to yamaha. Get the two stroke. email me jsapo@cfl.rr.com maybe we'll hook up to fish in the next week. The flounder at sebastian should be in full swing. John

The 18HP will be fine... Unless you really want the convience of electric start, I'd save your money, these new motors start very well and besides the exersice is great: then you have to make room for the battery plus extra cost of starter. Having said that, I use to have electric start on my 9.9 HP Yamaha 4-stroke, I liked it. ;)

Re: How much motor

Hello whfmznb
hmm, I have an ex-wife from Vero Beach..... but I won't hold that against you. I've got a 15' Lowes with a 30 Johnson on it (rated max 40). It does have a console and decking, so it's a little heavier than the average jon boat. But it gets up on plane and cruises at 20 mph fairly well. I would think a 3 cyl motor would be a little heavy for at 14, but as Mumblerone and Miloman say, the 18 should be fine. I have a rope start on my 30, it isn't that hard to start (except the first time when the rope broke!). But my wife wants me to look into an aftermarket electric starter. (Already have the batteries for the trolling motor.) I think I'll save the money and keep a spare rope on the boat! :D

I had a Seanymph 14 r first with a 15 hp Evinrude it ran fast (24 mph) with one person and could easy plane with 4 onboard.

I later put a 30 hp 3 cyl Suzuki on it - and it almost went into the sky (35+ miles) - it was almost dangerous to run with that strong engine on it - I would say a 15 hp or maybe 20 hp would be perfect for that light boat - dont buy an heavy engine for it - it is made for a light 2 stroke engine (eg OMC 15 hp 2 stroke)
