Re: how much lower unit oil

You didn't give a model or HP however I can give you a rather genaric answer that will still be right...

..............untill it's full..............

There are two plugs on the lower unit of most outboards, you fill and drain from the bottom one, you remove the top one to allow air in/or out while you fill or drain.

If using a plastic 1 liter bottle with the tapered end allwys let the bottom unit drain for 10 minutes or so while I heat up the new lube (in the bottle) in a bucket of hot water (flows much easier when warm/hot).

make sure the top (vent) plug is out and push the tapered tube into the bottom hole.......SQUEEEEEEEEEEZE.........in the new lube till it comes out the top (vent) hole.

Then (its nice to have 3 hands for this), while keeping the pressure on the bottle of lube so it doesn't suck the lube back out the same hole you pushed it into the bottom unit....replace the vent plug......then remove the bootle of lube from the bottom fill/drain hole and replace the plug here too.

MAKE SURE YOU USED NEW GASKETS ON THE TWO PLUGS.

Tighten as hard as you can by hand...you don't want a leak.

My 83 9.9 Johnson takes about 1/3 liter or so...
My 92 90 Johnson takes about 2/3 liter or so...

unless you have a really big motor a liter should be enough.

Until its full. Fill through the drain hold until the lub comes out the upper vent hole. Insert the vent screw first, then the drain. A quart container will be sufficient.

Re: how much lower unit oil

I was wondering why not fill through the upper hole, while the lower screwed in?
There must be a good answer, cause it sounds to easy :D

You'll get air bubbles trapped in the lower unit that way. They'll work themselves out when you run it, then you'll starve the LU for lubrication. It's not an experiment I would recommend.

Re: how much lower unit oil

I have little hand pumps that are designed pump oil into the lower unit. one end threads onto the bottom hole of the lower unit.

I don't remember them being expensive. well worth whatever I paid.

I got them at an auto parts store but you may have trouble finding them in todays market. probably cost 25 dollars at the marine dealer. there are at least 2 sizes of plugs . be sure to measure yours.

i replaced my oil plugs with stainless allen head plugs. much easier to install.

Totally WRONG answer...both out, squeeze in the bottom 'tll it comes out the top, keep the tube in the bottom, screw in the top plug, pull the tube, vacuum holds it in, replace bottom plug..NEW gaskets everytime..

Nice to learn on such small things.
That way you will fill it up for almost a 100%. Isn't that a problem when the oil heats up and expands a bit?

Fill it up 100%, there's still room above it inside to expand. And I use one of those pumps also. It makes it A LOT easier. Cost me about $12 at OMC dealer but available elsewhere. I HIGHLY recommend the 'lil pump. And as stated, always fill from the bottom.
