How much kicker do I need?

I have a 1984 24 ft. Galaxy Cuddy Cabin. This is a deep V style hull. the boat has a single 5.0/Alpha 1. The boat weighs 3750 lbs. empty. I am going to be using the boat in the Alabama Gulf Coast. I am bit nervous having just the single engine. I have signed up for SeaTow just in case. But I am wondering if anybody has any recommendations for what size kicker motor I should get for emergencies?

Thanks, Phil

I agree with TD on this. 15 or more.

It depends on the motor, if you're looking at new, or relatively new ones, then even a high thrust 8 works well. Used, most 15s and 9.9s are the same physical size so go with a 15 if you can.

I run a 15 hp Honda on my 24 footer, I have a friend with a 26 ft Tollycraft who runs a 9.9 Yammaha hi-thrust,it has plenty of push. I cannot open up the Honda as it ventilates, I need an extra long shaft as I cannot mount it any lower and still controle it

Good point on the extra long shaft, I forgot to mention that part. A long shaft may be OK, but Xlong will be better.
