How much HP can a Volvo 280

How much horsepower can a Volvo Penta 280 outdrive handle? Can't seem to find that info anywhere.

Why? Well your not going to believe it but a buddy of mine is going to repower his boat (22') with a turbine engine he bought. Its rated at 400 HP to 550 HP depending on fuel. The amazing thing is this thing must weigh about 125 to 150 lbs total including the gear reducer. (I helped carry it to his garage and could have done it easily by myself if it were not so akward.)

Yeah, if he can get it to work it should be FAST... Fuel efficent? Don't even go there...

As long as you dont jerk it into gear at 1200RPM it will handle over 600hp.

280s are pretty much bombproof. Just because they are from the same era as the alpha one doesn't mean they are even close to the same animal.

Be careful with that turbine! They take a ling time to get up to speed and to wind down. Shifting before that thing winds down fully would be disastrous for your outdrive. Also, if you're streaking along at 60 or 70+ knots, you will require one hell of a long distance to stop it. Much more than a piston engine setup!!! Good luck with it though; sounds like tons of fun....
