how much difference can a decarb make?

I have a 40c tohatsu that I havent run in a couple of years because I thought the compression was a little low. If my memory serves me right it was in the low to mid 90's. I am sure this motor has never had a decarb done to it and it is probably from the 80's, so how much would a decarb help? Do you think it could bring my numbers back up closer to te 100psi range? I guess my real question is what is the biggest gain you can get from doing a decarb??

It really depends on how much carbon is in there, jwilkey.

A decarb can result in no change, raised compression or improved match among the cylinders.

If your Tohatsu had mid 90s on both cylinders I would call that acceptable.

Remember. . . it is the consistency, not the absolute psi numbers, that matters most.

I have never run before and after compression readings when doing a decarb. I can tell you that it removed allot of carbon on the first application on my 40C. I re-apply during the spring commisioning, and it only has minor carbon build-up, now. Don't give up on that 40C yet. A can of seafoam is less than $10.
