We have an 1985 Evinrude that needs a lower unit. Out of curiosity, we were curious what a new engine would run versus replacing the lower unit.

Thanks

Tohatsu has published prices on their website. I think its www.tohatsu.com. I think they are the lowest cost of all outboards. At least you will have a guideline. Does anyone have experience with these?

I was thinking about getting a new 90 - 115 horse or so. I have a 19 Starcraft Islander that weighs 1250 pounds. I care about reliability, not the amount of dealers in the area. Dealers don't mean squat to me when I am 10 miles out to sea. I am thinking of Suzuki.

NickRT,
Don't know where you live but suggest you check out: www.edsmarinesuperstore.com
Ed's is located in Ashland, VA just north of Richmond. They have very low prices on new motors. For example an Evinrude 90 FICHT is listed at $5,499.

Good Luck - tcube

There's a reason the Evinrude FICHT is so cheap -- they've got a terrible reputation for reliability. I'd rather have a Tohatsu/Nissan!

The reason the FICHT engines have such a bad rep is all in the V6 engines. The V4s have been bulletproof. If you are afraid of the FICHT engines, the Johnson 90s are a good buy, an reliable. They can be found for around $5K.

Were I even thinking of repowering, I would think only 4 stroke, and only EFI. I was, I did, and I am thrilled.

Red Sky.....
JB

JB, what did you go with?

I found a used lower unit for $500 and a new one for $1125. Either way, a lot cheaper than some of the bids at $2400!

I am still on the fence to repower or to fix it but the $500 option is sounding pretty good; even if it just gets me through the season.

Re: How much are new 90 hp outboards?

Hi, Nick. My 17' Whaler is rated for 100hp, so I only considered 100hp or less motors. Only Suzuki makes EFI motors in this range. (Evinrude sells them, too.) The 90 is too heavy for my taste, so I got the 70 EFI. I was considering the Yamaha 100 carbureted engine but was put onto the Suzi by Fishnff, who has several friends with the Suzi/Evinrude 70 on their Whalers and he liked them better than his Merc 90 carbureted 4 stroke.

I am very very happy with the Suzi.

Red Sky....
JB
