I have a 25hp evinrude with flywheel # 315840. On the flywheel it states set points .020 and have motor in nuetral when starting. I burned out my starter and when i took it to an alternator shop they had to order a new starter. The old pinion on the starter had 10 teeth and the new pinion has 11 teeth. There is no model number plate on the transom and the freeze plug is gone too so i have no way of identitying this motor. Will one extra tooth on the new pinion keep it from working properly on this flywheel? I would reuse the ten tooth pinion but it is damaged and the teeth are chewed up from the mechanism that is supposed to keep the pinion down from the flywheel. Thanks for your help!

Re: How many teeth for starter pinion?

Yes, you will have to get the correct starter bendix with the correct number of teeth.
