How many poles?

I have a 1965 (1966?), 4 cylinder, Merc 650, 65 HP and I would like to get a tach for it.
I am ASSUMING that because it is a 4 cylinder the flywheel stator is 4 pole.
Am I correct? Sorry if the answer is blatantly obvious, this is my first venture into 2 stroke engines. So far it has been fun and productive.
Thanks for the help

Stator poles and cylinder count are unrelated. Look up a parts picture and count the knobs on the stator, filling in any places there aren't any or they appear to be run together. It probably will come out to be 12. So it's 12 pole, or 6 pulse.

Hope it helps

John is correct. I just installed a tach for my 1965 Merc 500, and that is what I used (12 pole-6 pulse). I just attached the signal line from the tach to one of the yellow wires coming from the stator where it meets the rectifier. Works perfectly.
