We are members and feel its a worthwhile organization. Its a great way to help conserve your state and federal marine
resources and your interests as a recreational angler.

This past year, our CCA initiated legal and legislative campaigns to protect recreational angler's freedom to fish; successfully fought to maintain implementation of bycatch reduction
devices in Gulf shrimp trawls; and continued local, state and national programs targeting the proper management of our coastal marine resources. But, there is still a lot of work to do.

Here's the link if you are interested in joining your local chapter.

Coastal Conservation Association

Re: How many of you are CCA Members?

I was most of the years I lived in Texas. I also believe they do good work, with the occasinal wild goose chase mixed in. For the most part they are a very focused organization that is very good at what they do. Now that I am back in Minnesota I am no longer a member but I do have the "redfish" on the back of my truck. I have enoufgh left over reds that I suspect I will have one on my trucks for many years to come. Just kinda got used to having it there I guess.

Re: How many of you are CCA Members?

I do not belong to the CCA.
It is my opinion that they try to take credit for what other organizations do.
Before joining you should check them out.
I can only speak for the striped bass fishery.
Back in the late 70s-early80s when striped bass were almost extinct it wasn't any doing of the CCA to help to bring the fishery back. The National Marine fisheries put strict regulations. They closed the fishery down "no fishing for striped bass" commercial or recreational for about 7 years or so.
I can not speak for other states because I only follow Massachusetts striped bass fishing.

Recreational fishermen in Massachusetts catch and keep over " 5 million " lbs. of striped bass.
Commecial fishermen who are mostly recreational after the season closes are allowed to catch one million pounds. A far lower account then the recs.

The commercial quota has not increased by 950 thousand pounds. The old quota was 850 thousand pounds. It has only been increased by 100 thousand pounds. The commercial quota is caught up in 3 weeks and we all go back to recreational fishing.

I see no need to just make this fishery a recreational sport, "sportsfish" Especially now when the striped bass is starting to show signs of disease from over population and other reasons.

Sent an e-mail to the CCA asking:
What % of my membership dollar goes towards operating exspenses??
What % goes towards restoration of a fishery??

I'm always skepticle of "Any " non profit groups. I don't support any group that does not give back 60% or more
I hope they respone!!!

Re: How many of you are CCA Members?

:) You may be right!!!
It seems that when something good happens to the fishery every group wants to take credit!!!
When something goes wrong none of these groups want to take the blame.
Like I said sent them an e-mail and wanted to know what percentage of my membership dollar goes towards administrative cost and what % goes towards the restoration of sportfishing.
So far they only sent me a web site about charities www.charitynavigator.com Couldn't find anything about adminastrative cost.

Since you are a member maybe you know what % goes to administration cost??

Re: How many of you are CCA Members?

Though my memory may be clouded by time it seems to me they have a very low admin cost. Somewhere in the mid to high 80's got to there work. I don't recall but this does seem to ring a bell.

For many years CCA was a Texas organization but as the grew it became GCCA (gulf coast conservation association) and then just CCA as it moved up the east coast. As they were moving up the coast they were tackling some issues that took a lot of money, a major portion of it came from there Texas base. At the time I considered not renewing as I hated to see the money leave the state. The more I read what they were doing the less I felt this way. In retrospect, it was a bold and risky move that could have alienated there base. It has paid off bigtime and the org has grew immensly. The last I new there name was very good...I hope it still is. All this from a grassroots effort to improve bayfishing in Texas. IMO we need more like them!!!

Re: How many of you are CCA Members?

Several years ago it seems to me they were claiming 18% admin cost's, but that is from memory that sometimes plays tricks on me. Just my recolection for what it's worth...That and $1 will get ya a cup of coffee most places.

Re: How many of you are CCA Members?

:) Not interested in coffee!!!
You do not know what percentage of your dollar goes for administration. Shame on you!!!
So far nobody can tell me or give me a web site where I could find out where my dollar is going!!!

You people are members don't even know what percentage of your money goes back into the restoration of the fishery.

It is not to much to ask.

They are a non profit organisation so it should be public record!!!!

And they still haven't responded except to give me a web site for charity!!! Charity begans at home!!!!

I've given them three days!!! something seems to be awash here.

They are not dealing with my wife. She will give to anything!!!!

Re: How many of you are CCA Members?

Flyrod, If you read my earlier post you would notice I am no longer a member due to where I live. Also if you would have went to the website they linked you to it would have gave you a third party verification of the facts you requested. It has been three years since I have been a member but if you read what I copied from charitynavigator's website you will notice my recolection of there admin cost's were within 2.3 % of actual(I'm impressed, my memory doesent always fail me). Since they meet your criteria and they did in fact respond in a timley manor to your information request can I assume you will be joining soon?
;)

ORGANIZATIONAL EFFICIENCY
Fundraising Efficiency $0.02
Fundraising Expenses 0.8%
Program Expenses 83.6%
Administration Expenses 15.7%

ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY
Primary Revenue Growth 3.2%
Program Expenses Growth 7.4%
Working Capital Ratio (years) 0.42

INCOME STATEMENT: FYE 12/2002
Revenue
Primary Revenue $3,538,269
Other Revenue $4,294,725
Total Revenue: $7,832,994
Expenses
Fundraising Expenses $59,042
Program Expenses $6,468,353
Administration Expenses $1,212,620
Total Functional Expenses: $7,740,015

Payments to Affiliates $0
Excess (or Deficit) for the Year $92,979

Net Assets: $3,780,160
