How many hours on an 80hp merc is good/bad

G'day .... just found your site and I think its great!

I've been given a 5.2 metre half cabin cruiser, fibreglass complete with outboard engine and trailer ... overall in good condition. The outboard is a blueband 80hp merc which I'm fairly sure was manufactured in 1978. Can someone advise if 550 engine hours is good or bad or normal for an engine of this age. The engine has been regulary serviced and seems to run fine ... reaches 5000rpm and boat planes fine. Also does anyone know the weight of 1978 80hp merc ... look forward to your advice

steve 550hrs seems low hrs but any thing can go wrong with a 20 plus year old engine . I would service the water pump, change gear lube, pressure test L.U. when changing lube and run merc 2cycle oil .these sugestions are a basic starting point , keep an eye on her till you really know her ,even then she might surprise you.

steve, would not say 550 is high or low, this motor has been around for some time....the weak point on these engines is idle/low rpm running quality.....when these motors get tired, the in-gear idle gets weak...you end up with alot of neutral rpm, and stalling into gear when shifting....if this is not the case, normal maintenance should keep you happy for some time...
