How many different things can go wrong with a starter?

My 97 Force 120 will not start using the starter. I have checked every nut, bolt, wire, jumped the solenoid, and put a new brush kit in the starter. I took the battery to the parts store, and it tested 853out of 800 cca (it's brand new). The problem started a while back with a weak starter, which lead me to believe I needed a new battery. My problem has got worse to the point where the starter will engage but hardly turn the engine. Any help from this board's wealth of knowledge will be greatly appreciated. Pull starting this ***** is getting annoying, and embarrassing!

Did you put a little grease in the front and rear bushings while the starter was apart? My 90 HP had the same symptoms and it fixed the problem.

No, I just though it back together It spun freely minus the resistance from the magnets.

now that I think about it I didn't see any bushing in mine. I saw sealed bearings. I did also clean the contacts at the top of the windings with a scotchbrite pad.

Once it starts does it perform the way it should?
The battery cable or ground connections ok?
Check the cable for weak spots or lumps
Sometimes low compression on 1 or more cylinders can affect the starter.
Do a compression test.
The bearings in the lower unit can drag and affect the starter.
Remove it and try to start.

can we get a few more details please.
you say it will not start from the starter......
does the starter do anything at all or does it do nothing. Theres a big difference between the starter trying or the starter doing nothing when it comes to the advice we give you.

when I try the starter it will barley turn the motor over and gets supper hot. The hotter it get the less it turn. After my first post I finally found the new search feature, and after reading a few I ran down and got a brand new starter.$$$! I had no idea the windings could go bad.

There's a few more steps to rebuilding a starter than a quick clean with a scotch-bright pad. Some times a new starter is the best option especially as you may need brushes, springs for the old one.
Have you got the new starter installed and working?

Compression test, then ohm meter on your starter, if it is a high reading more than likely you've cooked your stator. But as previously mentioned, check all connections by removing them and re-doing them to make sure there is no corrosion under the lugs of the cables, they may look alright at first sight, but you need to remove and re-install to know if there is corrosion there. The main culprit is the earth to the motor and and solenoid. It could also be a high resistant contact on your starter solenoid, to test this jumper the starter solenoid.

Great! Sometimes you can only diagnose so much until you finally realize the starter is actually bad.
