I have a 1996 Wellcraft 26 Excel. The current controls are the quicksilver 3000 classic controls which take the 600 series cables.Short story the controls are junk(worn out) . I want to replace the unit with the new quicksilver 4000 unit which takes a different cable. I know that there are 2 cables coming out of the control box. One to the carburator and one to a bracket which is hooked to a plate that swivels moving another cable which goes to the lower unit. Do I need a total of 2 or a total of 3 cables?

Thanks Steve.

Re: How many control cables?

i assume you have a mercruiser. you need the throttle cable, and the shift cable, from the control to the engine. the one to the lower unit, is and if. when was it last service, when was the outdrive, last removed serviced, and realigned. there is nothing worse than to have a new controller, and have the outdrive cable go bad. also when were the bellows last replaced. the boat is 12 years old, and if they haven;t been replaced they a long overdue.

Hi
The boat has 141 original hours on it. It has a 7.4 mercruiser bravo 2 outdrive. According to the previous owner the lower unit was pulled and serviced last year. I dont know if the bellows have been replaced, but the rubber still seems fairly plyable. I do know that the outdrive has to be trimed all the way down to connect a 4" rubber tube to the outdrive ( I think this is where the exhaust exits from) If the bellow is a ribbed rubber pipe apx 3" in dia It looks to be in fairly good shape. I just got done replacing the exhaust risers and manifolds, fuel pump, raw water pump, rebuilt the carb, replaced the water separator.

Re: How many control cables?

nice set up, i have a VP 5.7 sx, i do know that the merc I/O forum recommends the annual pulling of the out drive to service the unit, gimbal bearing etc. all the rubber fittings between the boat and outdrive are considered the bellows. the 1st to fail is usually the one with the shift cable going thru it. i suggest you spend some time in the merc/volvo forum looking around. i do not do the maintainance, on my I/O that was the agreement when we bought it. i maintained one i/o never again.

I will go over the rubber parts w/ a fine tooth comb!! With my luck, I suppose I will need a special tool to realign the lower unit with the motor?

Tash are you saying that you like the outboard better? As in you have someone work on your I/O's? From the years i have been here it sounds like you rebuilt many a boat. Do you just do outboard boats as a rule? Just curious. I have never owned a I/O and i have only dealt with yamaha outboards but I have serviced I/O's for friends and older family members and found only 1 that was more dificult to service than my outboards. The reason for that was that perticular one was difficult to get to everything. All the others were way easier to service than my outboards. Im intimidated in a way by the larger outboards.

Re: How many control cables?

Forgot the main thing i posted here for! You got a throttle cable and a shift cable, thats the 2 cables. You got to make sure you get it right cause if you dont the outdrive will slightly grind like you are about to shift to F or R, if you dont have it adjusted right. That outdrive is easy to pull and install. I need to replace my cables for my yamaha outboard and i dont want to do it. I got the cables gorilla taped for the rest of the season til i get in to my mommy and daddy's gerauge for the winter. I Might pull the floor up again and open up the closed bow and possibly make it a CC. Thats something im going to post for opinion in the restoration room.
