The old story goes, bought boat for $24,000 and sold it for $12,000. Are there any that actually appreciated in value? (come on 1988 bayliner capri, please be on the list haha):D

I'm sure there have been a few pampered glastron carlson's out there that would make the list.

Seen the price on an old, wooden Chris Craft?

None of our favorite toys increase in value (cars, boats, bikes, rv's). Except when they become "vintage", of course you need to have the right old one for it to become "vintage".

Ayuh,.... Exactly,.... Findin' an 30 year old Classic, is the only way that works out...

A 70-something Highliner 222 went for $22,000.00 last season up on the river....
They routinely sell for $5,000.00, or More,.....
Even the 1s Needin' a refit don't go for much under a couple Grand, on up...

Powerboats by-and-large depreciate, loosing value as they age. A few rare classics and suitable restoration are probably the exceptions.

Sailboats . . . can actually hold value or even appreciate . . .

I bought a Catalina 22 for $2900 in 1997, got a trailer for $800. So, $3700 total.

In 2004, I sold the boat and trailer for $4900. !!!

There are days when I wished I had it back . . .

Many of the really old wood boats like Chris Craft and Garwood appreciate but that's all I've ever seen.

Here's a $50,000 boat.

1946 20' Chris-Craft Custom Runabout

And they're listing it as ready for varnish and bottom paint, so it's not even fully restored.

Well you need to bring inflation into the picture and some baseline to really come up with an answer. Then do you add in the cost of the rehab as well to get the final answer? Pick a year of one of the classic boats, calculate the dollar equivalent today and let's do the math.

Well if its value you are after, buy a $25K boat and put another $25K into savings. I guarantee I know which will be worth more in 20 years. :D

The way things seem to be going, neither one will be worth a whole heck of a lot by then... ;)

If the boat's still floating, the 25K cash might get you a quarter tank of gas for it....

Bought a 1989 20' Caravelle in 2009 for $2,200 then sold it for $2,500 a few years later. Its certainly not gained much in value but then again, a gain is a gain especially since I got a few years of use out of it.

We have owned a lot of boats in the past 51 years and a lot of the used ones made a few bucks for us, the 2 new ones didn't.

I paid $3100 for my 1966 Boston Whaler Sakonnet 16, (SUNSHINE) new, in 1967. I sold her in 1983 for $6500. If she were for sale today she would probably still bring 6 to 7K.

My 1985 Boston Whaler Striper 15 (RED SKY) came in 2004 for $3750 and left in 2008 for $4500.

Premium classics, in Bristol fashion, generally sell like classic cars.

Yup. A dollar in 1946 was worth about $12.50 today.
Here is a neat calculator.
