I am looking at buying a boat which has sat for 4years. It has a built in tank, the fuel has been sitting for 4years with fuel stablizer added when stored.

What should I do with this?
Pump it out? And then What?

Or is it safe to run?

Thank you for your help.

I wouldn't count on the fuel being good for much over a year. This is what the stabilizer people claim and thats if you start with fresh gas. I think you'll save yourself a lot of headaches if you get rid of this gas and start fresh.

i agree, i've made the mistake of using gas that was stabalized, but had been sitting more than a year. The engine didnt run right at all. Plus if you have a metal tank you could have debris in there, or worse water. I would siphon it out and make sure the inside of the tank is good and clean and start with some fresh gas.

Drain it, or take a chance of ruining your engine. Your choice. :)

Also keep in mind that if it's a two-cycle
engine that there's a gas/oil mixture in there
and you can't legally siphon it out and just
dump it somewhere. It can be pretty expensive
to dispose of it properly.

If it is a two-cycle, Service places can do a
test on it to see if it contains any water and
if it doesn't they might be able to add some
stable and get the fuel to the point where it is
useable. Not great, but good enough to burn out
rather than dealing with costly disposal.

Sta-bil advertises to keep fuel fresh for one year. Briggs and Stratton has their own brand stabilizer and it is advertised to keep fuel fresh for 2 yrs.

You also may be able to dispose of that gas by adding it to your car or truck. I dont do it often because i've heard that oil can clogg up the fuel injectors, but if its carborated then there shouldn't be a problem. Also if i do that i add only like a gallon or so each time and top off with fresh gas immediately after.
